On Thursday, prominent South Korean politician Lee Jae-Myung was stabbed in the neck during a visit to the city of Busan while on the campaign trail. Lee, who addresses the opposition party, was blending with allies when a man hurried the stage and went after him with a little blade, injuring him in the neck before security officials quelled and captured him. Lee supported a minor 2-centimetre cut and was moved quickly to a nearby medical clinic, where he got therapy. Authorities have launched an investigation into the disturbing public attack.

Suspected Attacker Apprehended
The man alleged to have stabbed the opposition leader was taken into police custody at the scene. Authorities have identified him as a 72-year-old Busan local. Reports indicate the senior citizen has no organizational ties and may have carried out the attack independently out of his stated opposition to Lee’s political leanings as a member of a left-leaning party. Police say the suspected assailant was previously detained for causing public disturbances and has demonstrated concerning irrational behaviour before. Prosecutors say charges are forthcoming.
Condemnation of Political Violence
The brazen attack on Lee Jae-Myung has drawn widespread condemnation from politicians across the ideological spectrum in South Korea and internationally. Rival party leaders spoke out to denounce violence against political figures, saying such actions threaten democracy and the rule of law. While opposing Lee’s policy positions, they stressed any dissent must be expressed civilly and emphasized that police must impartially enforce laws barring assaults targeting prominent public officials regardless of affiliation.
Ongoing Healing Process
In the wake of the attack, doctors say Lee Jae-Myung is making excellent progress in recovering from the neck wound he sustained. He has been meeting with visitors and conducting work duties as usual during his hospital stay. However, as the traumatic experience sinks in both physically and mentally, he will take time in the coming weeks to recuperate fully, surrounded by loved ones. Still, his resolve to keep fighting for his principles remains intact, if not strengthened, by surviving this near-death encounter.
Commitment to Nonviolence
As Lee Jae-Myung recovers, he has reaffirmed his commitment to nonviolent engagement, hoping this incident sparks deeper reflection on elevating political debate in society. He also forgave his suspected assailant despite the man’s misguided actions. Undaunted, Lee says he will turn this attack into increased motivation to pursue democratic reforms through compassionate, reasoned discourse rather than retaliate with anything other than grace.
