The Incident

Around 6:30 pm on February 1st, firefighters rushed to a call regarding a fire at Hill’s multi-million-dollar residence in the Evergreen neighbourhood of Davie. Crews arriving on the scene found flames engulfing a section of the mansion’s second floor before working to extinguish the blaze. Photos show Hill’s custom sports car with some exterior damage from the fire.

Approximately $35,000 in structural damage was done to the home before the fire was under control. No injuries to people were reported.

Cause Determined to be Children Playing

According to a Davie Police Department incident report, Tyreek Hill was home with his two young children when the fire broke out. After inspecting the site and gathering witness statements, investigators determined that the kids had been playing with a lighter and incense sticks without adult supervision in an upstairs bedroom. That reckless play sparked the accidental blaze that spread out of control, per official statements.

Police will not be filing any criminal charges against anyone involved, given the circumstances of an accidental fire started by young children. Child welfare authorities were also notified as standard procedure any time young kids face harm or endanger others.

Tyreek Hill Reaction

Tyreek Hill plays wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, which he joined last season after 6 years with the Kansas City Chiefs. Hill released a short statement on social media saying:

“My children are safe, healthy and happy. This was an unfortunate accident that occurred when I had my kids with me while I had to run down the street. We will continue to monitor the situation with authorities, but our focus is on our family.”

The incident is a prime example of how quickly young children playing with fire sources can spiral out of control. Parents should always keep lighters, matches and incense safely out of reach of kids.

Fortunately, Hill’s family and home survived relatively unscathed. But the accident gives the football star a reason to childproof his residence further.
