Staffers at Vice Media are worried about potential plans to shutter or significantly reduce operations for the company’s flagship Vice News site.

Earlier this week, top editorial staff informed employees in various meetings that they have asked Vice Media management for clarity on Vice News’ future but have not received a response.

Vice News Editor-in-Chief Josh Visser said he gave CEO Bruce Dixon and other executives opportunities to deny rumors of the site’s closure. However, the lack of response was “very upsetting,” Visser told staff. He added that a proposed newsroom restructuring plan was rejected and the site still lacks an approved budget for the year.

Staff have inquired about upcoming paychecks and device access in light of the uncertainty. “I don’t know more than you guys besides being able to read faces and notice who is not replying to my messages,” Visser admitted.

Vice Media filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2022. It subsequently cancelled its signature daily news program, announced cost-cutting plans, and completed a sale to former lenders led by Fortress Investment Group last July.

While a “companywide security and data compliance update” triggered employee speculation this week, a source claimed it is unrelated to Vice News’ situation.

The lack of transparency from leadership on the site’s status has sparked staff apprehension only six months after Vice emerged from bankruptcy. Moving forward, clear communication will be key to maintaining editorial morale and reassuring staff at a time of apparent flux.
