A number of popular European destinations saw outbreaks of West Nile Virus (WNV) last year, putting travellers on alert. Over 700 locally-transmitted cases and 67 deaths were recorded across the continent, according to European health authorities. Of concern, infections popped up in areas that draw tens of thousands of holidaymakers each summer.

Italy Hard Hit With Over 300 Cases

WNV activity was highest in Italy, which documented 336 cases. Other well-loved vacation spots also reported local transmission, including Greece (162 cases), Romania (103), France (43), Hungary (29), Spain (19), Germany (6), Croatia (6), and Cyprus (5). While the total number decreased from the prior year, the geographic spread reached its highest level since 2018 – now affecting 9 regions.

Mosquitos Spread Virus During High Season

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said most viral transmission occurred between July and September, when mosquitos are out in full force. Humans contract WNV from the bite of blood-feeding mosquitos carrying the virus after they feed on infected birds.

Symptoms May Include Rash, Fever, Weakness

Many folks brush off WNV without any symptoms. But some develop flu-like complaints like fever, chills, muscle weakness, skin rash, headache, nausea and fatigue. In more dangerous cases, it can lead to vision problems, numbness, tremors, neck pain, coma, paralysis and even death. Those over 50 or with conditions like diabetes face higher risks of severe disease.

No cure exists, so vigilant bite protection is key. Heading to affected spots this summer? Bring and use bug sprays, wear long sleeves and pants, and sleep under treated mosquito netting. With proper precautions, we can still explore these remarkable destinations as safely as possible.
