On Friday morning, a shooter started shooting at Perry Secondary School in Perry, Iowa, multiple different individuals before being shot dead by police.

The Shooting

At around 8:30 am, police got reports of an active shooter at the school. The shooter, recognized as a 17-year-old male understudy at the school, entered the building outfitted with different guns. He began shooting indiscriminately, injuring several students and faculty. Police and Specialized squads immediately appeared on the scene while the school went into lockdown. After a confrontation, law enforcement fatally shot the gunman inside the school building at approximately 9:00 am.

Injuries & Fatalities

At least 5 people were injured in the shooting, including 3 students and 2 teachers. All of the victims sustained gunshot wounds, and several had severe or critical injuries. Unfortunately, one 15-year-old female understudy was killed before the shooter was halted. The names of the casualties have not yet been released. In addition to those shots, several other students and staff suffered minor injuries while evacuating during the lockdown and active shooter situation.

The gunman was the only fatality in the shooting.

Aftermath & Reaction

Perry High School and all Perry Community School District schools are closed today as the investigation continues. Students have been reunited with their families, and victims’ identities will be released once families have been notified. Perry High will provide counselling services for students when schools reopen next week.

Iowa Governor [Name] expressed sympathies, calling the shooting a “senseless tragedy” and promising resources to support the Perry community. Perry Police and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are cooperating on an ongoing investigation.
